Sheriff refuses to recuse himself over son’s post
Marquis Martin, 26, disappeared last year and his body was found a few weeks later. The State Crime Lab determined he was killed for a gunshot to head. The gunman had not been found. Sheriff Mark Gober’s son posted an image with racial slur. Martin’s mother, Lakisha Williams, claims a nose, eye, and mouth visible in the image belong to her deceased son. Gober claimes the photo has been altered and his son was not in the state when Martin disappeared.
Many rumors have started on social media and the sheriff has been requesting anyone with direct knowledge to contact his department. Williams wishes Gober to recuse himself and turn over the investigation to state police. The Arkansas State Police believe the sheriff’s department should remain the lead investigative agency.
This is the ninth homicide Grober has investigated since taking office. He called this case “complex.”
